Mother Earth has a rhythm just like us. She is breathing. Breathes in. Repent. In winter, when it is cold and dark outside. And exhales. Blossoms. In summer, when it is light and warm. The summer solstice is celebrated on June 24 with the St. John’s Celebration at all Free Schools. Wreaths are made, stories are told, music is made, dances and picnics. And – the highlight of the party – jumped over fire: the baptism of fire. The longest day of the year.
For Curious Rosa van Wissen, the memory of the Sint-Jans celebration is one of great nostalgia. The many customs and rituals that the Free School adds to education are a warm memory for her, as a former student of the Free School Zutphen and at the same time she sometimes wonders: shouldn’t I have enjoyed it much more at the time? The freedom, the carefree existence of a teenager. So perfectly expressed in the St. John’s Feast. That is why she will share some of these memories with us this evening and will find out what makes her so full of warmth.
The St. Johns Feast is also becoming a tradition at TenClub. We are now celebrating it for the third time in the garden of Jochem and Merel in Baambrugge. Once again supervised by Kees van Dongen, also a Free School child. We are going to tell stories by the fire, we go into the sweat lodge, we immerse ourselves and Shaman Zowie will do our own rite of passage with us.
