TenClub and the Dutch Embassy in Cuba proudly present the Hubert de Blanck Concert, focusing on the chamber music repertoire of this late 19th/early 20th century Cuban pianist and composer with Dutch roots. The line-up will include a chamber ensemble of Cuban and Dutch musicians of the highest calibre with Anolan González (viola), Tijmen Huisingh (violin), Marcos Madrigal (piano), Karla Martínez (piano), Jenny Peña (violin), Willem Stam (cello) and Caroline Strating (mezzo-soprano).
Born in Utrecht in 1856, Hubertus Christiaan de Blanck studied piano at the Liège conservatory from the age of nine. Via Germany, Russia, Poland, Brazil and the United States, where De Blanck held various musical posts in each case, he ended up in the Cuban capital Havana in 1883. There, he quickly built a network within the art community. With several others, De Blanck founded the Sociedad de Musica Classica, an ensemble specialised mainly in chamber music. In 1885, De Blanck founded the very first Cuban conservatory. Because of his sympathies for the Cuban rebels’ fight for independence, De Blanck was deported by the Spanish rulers from 1896 to 1899.
Hubert de Blanck is still very well known in Cuba. We are of the opinion that his life and work also deserve more attention in the Netherlands. Hence, TenClub and the Dutch embassy in Cuba present this unique evening, with an exclusive chamber music programme composed entirely by De Blanck.
Afterwards, Jorge Martínez Galán and his band will give a concert of Cuban Latin Jazz on Nes 120, next to the Mayer Manor.

TenClub presenteert in samenwerking met de Nederlandse ambassade op Cuba het Hubert de Blanck Concert, waarin het kamermuziekrepertoire van deze laat 19e/begin 20e eeuwse Cubaanse pianist en componist met Nederlandse roots centraal staat. De line-up zal bestaan uit een orkest van Cubaanse en Nederlandse muzikanten van het allerhoogste niveau met Anolan González (altviool), Tijmen Huisingh (viool), Marcos Madrigal (piano), Karla Martínez (piano), Jenny Peña (viool), Willem Stam (cello) en Caroline Strating (sopraan).
De in 1856 in Utrecht geboren Hubertus Christiaan de Blanck studeerde al vanaf zijn negende piano aan het conservatorium van Luik. Via Duitsland, Rusland, Polen, Brazilië en de Verenigde Staten, waar De Blanck telkens verschillende muzikale posten bekleedde, belandde hij in 1883 in de Cubaanse hoofdstad Havana. Daar bouwde hij al snel een netwerk op binnen de kunstgemeenschap. Met een aantal anderen richtte De Blanck de Sociedad de Musica Classica, waarmee ze hoofdzakelijk kamermuziek speelden. In 1885 richtte De Blanck het allereerste Cubaanse conservatorium op. Vanwege zijn sympathieën voor de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd van de Cubaanse rebellen werd De Blanck van 1896 tot 1899 door de Spaanse machthebbers gedeporteerd.
Hubert de Blanck geniet in Cuba nog altijd grote bekendheid. Zijn leven en werk verdient ook in Nederland meer aandacht. Vandaar dat TenClub en de Nederlandse ambassade op Cuba dit unieke programma presenteren, met een exclusief, volledig door De Blanck gecomponeerd kamermuziekprogramma.
Na afloop zal Jorge Martínez Galán met zijn band op Nes 120, naast de Mayer Manor een concert geven met Cubaanse Latin Jazz.
