The Grand Piano Series: Kasper Schonewille plays Mendelssohn and Mussorgsky

Event details

Curated by pianist, composer, conductor, improviser, chamber musician, répétiteur and professor of piano Henry Kelder, TenClub’s Grand Piano Series reintroduces piano music by the world’s most inspiring classical composers as well as by those who deserve more attention. These intimate concerts take place in our majestic Monster Room, which is reminiscent of the salons of 17th, 18th and 19th Europe. Very much in the historical tradition of the salon, the audience will be given the opportunity to ask questions about the music they have just listened to.

Kasper Schonewille
Performing on Thursday March 20th is Mendelssohn specialist Kasper Schonewille.
Schonewille’s deep interest in the music of the 19th century sparked his interest in the original instruments of the era. Playing the original Érard grand pianos, like the one we have at TenClub, allows Schonewille, in his own words, “to get much closer to the intention of the music”. In 2023, Kasper wrote history as the first Dutchman to ever play on the very same Érard grand piano that was used for Franz Liszt and Sigismund Thalberg concert in 1837.

Mendelssohn and Mussorgsky: A Strange Combination?

Mendelssohn and Mussorgsky – both composers from the Romantic Period – were only a generation apart – but their music couldn’t be more different. Mendelssohn – a pianist, composer and conductor of genius proportions – made a very light and refined type of music, whereas Mussorgsky’s compositions are monumental, dark and rough.

However… both composers have a connection with the visual arts. Mendelssohn made lots of drawings on his travels and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by a collection of paintings by Viktor Hartmann.
