The Grand Piano Series: Lucas van der Vegt + Laurens de Man

Event details

Time travelling through stories
The renditions we present to our Curious audience contain programs have been carefully put together by a diverse range of pianists, who are all passionate about and specialised in historical pianos. Not only are the performing artists fantastic musicians, they are also great storytellers. More than piano concerts, TenClub Grand Piano evenings are transcendental experiences, offering its visitors in-depth information about the music played, the instruments used and much more.

Additional art forms: poetry, photography, film and more
The great salons of Europe used to be places where multiple art forms would be practiced simultaneously and TenClub’s Mayer Manor is no different in that respect. Besides music, there is always additional art to be seen, heard or experienced during these evenings, whether that is poetry, film or various forms of fine art.

The program for tonight
Actor-pianist Lucas van der Vegt and pianist Laurens de Man present a unique programme of rarely performed works. Central to the evening is Enoch Arden, an epic narrative by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809–1892), accompanied by the evocative piano music of none other than Richard Strauss. The result is a melodrama—a powerful genre in which spoken word and music intertwine to profound effect, particularly in the intimate salon setting of TenClub.

The second half features Schubert’s seldom-heard Divertissement à l’Hongroise, a work that captures his unmistakable blend of playful charm and haunting melancholy, subtly veiled beneath the vibrant rhythms of Hungarian folk music.

To conclude the programme, the duo performs a selection of poignant miniatures by Hungarian composer György Kurtág (b. 1926), whose crystalline works explore the mysteries of life and death in just a handful of notes.
