Culture Cocktail | Shakespeare Was A Rapper

Event details

What’s in a name? The Culture Cocktail at our Maison des Curiosités is where different art forms come together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Expect anything from cabaret to stand up comedy and from jazz to vaudeville and more. Sip on the very best drinks and witness how our Theatre of Life comes to life!

Line-up: Shakespeare Was A Rapper

Join us for a theater of life, a compelling lecture by Julian Alexander and Asiah Thomas-Mandlman that explores the rich history of hip-hop, from its earliest roots to its powerful narrative tradition. The talk delves into Shakespeare’s use of rhythm and the sonnets, and features performances inspired by Poe, Coleridge, and Blake, along with insights into the ‘speech effusive’ flow, what truly makes hip-hop theatre thrive.

Experience a dynamic, modern Shakespearean scene performed entirely in contemporary hip-hop language. Plus, enjoy an interactive segment where Julian and Asiah engage the audience in a fun game, challenging them to distinguish between hip-hop lyrics and Shakespeare quotes. Don’t miss this exciting fusion of classical and modern storytelling!
