Poetry Brothel: The Poetics of Rebellion

Event details

Poetry Brothel is an immersive literary cabaret club night where jazz musicians, burlesque dancers, tarot readers and other vagabonds mingle and perform, while poetry holds centre stage. Poets are available for private readings.

This very first edition of the ‘24/’25 season will be a celebration of all things wild, provocative and rebellious! From the revolutionary queer take on a sonnet to the wildest striptease you’ve ever seen, a unique and raunchy band of rebellious poets will be taking over two buildings for this very special “Randy-Vous”!

Enjoy the by-now-familiar environs of Maison de Curiosité on Nes 120 as each room and secret corner is commandeered by one unique and characterful performer of the night, and the entire space is turned into a movie set. With over a dozen unique spaces to draw you in and treat you well, there will be delights and decadence aplenty!

Line-up:

Tarologist Safa Mirror is ALWAYS rebellious, as her trade – Tarot – is an act of rebellion in itself. “Tarot has Dionysos – god of epiphany – presiding over it,” says Safa. Who wouldn’t want to get in touch with an entity so divine? Go find Safa – somewhere deep down in the Poetry Brothel – to to get in touch with the rebel deep within your soul.

A collective embracing beauty and danger, Het Fabularium is on a mission to bring untamed beauty as an antidote against mediocrity. If you understand Dutch, then don’t miss their performance Inborst – a poetic plea for sabotaged love that will leave you excited for new romantic opportunities…

Queer poet, mad scientist and affectionate doctor for the lonely, Kiwi Talks Too Much is a beacon of love amidst the often mentally challenging concrete jungle. Especially for the customers of The Poetry Brothel, Kiwi has stolen an amount of the sought after oxytocine potion from a mental hospital to treat this agonising, ever abundant love sickness. Go look for Kiwi in the Brothel and give them and yourself some love!

A rebel renaissance woman and member of the Prostitution Information Centre Amsterdam, Nat Portnoy embraces the allure of a seductive doctor, ready to offer exclusive consultations on the intricacies of sex work, rights and sexual wellness. In the battle of rebellion, every warrior needs a healer. Let Nat tend to your mind, body, and soul, weaving a seamless blend of education and care.
While she’s searching for what it means to be human, words flow from her fingertips. India Zahra Lyell wraps darkness in a box of chocolates, or slaps it on the table like raw meat. She weaves this with an addiction to freedom and thus serves us a collection of honest poems.

Rebelling against conventional ideals about sex, love and romance, self proclaimed ethical slut Brenno Mulder mesmerises his customers with enchanting poems about polyamory, porn, anal sex and gardening. Sounds good right? Go find him, in his very own private room deep down in the Poetry Brothel!

Young Hoops invites you to join her for a meditative and experimental clown ritual that involves face painting. Try on one or more costumes and – most of all – enjoy playing around with expression.

American writer, actor, visual artist and musician Sean Patrick Mulroy will leave you shocked with all you didn’t know about the history of queer people, and surprised by what you already knew but never could articulate. Sounds exciting? Make sure to find Sean somewhere deep down in the Brothel!

Poet of non-verbal sounds and strong supporter of using Gibberish Verdigris has a profound love for elsewhere. “It is a place where abuse, harm, shame and boredom have no color. No taste of iron. No waste of irony.” Or in Gibberish: “Avoly feebalos smaither oltra. Brox neeh, haarm, shumon n’orrika, no clamor. Nomm tast feron. Noom wosck irony.” Come find Verdigris in one of the more mysterious rooms of the Poetry Brothel to taste a little more…

Occupying one of the smallest rooms in all of Amsterdam – is Het Kleinste Kamertje, a Utrecht based collective with a passion for slowing down. Enter their analogue photo booth and witness the entire process of portrait photography as it was once done universally: from the framing of your photo, your thumb winding the lever, to measuring your chemicals, focusing the grain and taking home a souvenir – depicting your rebellious self – from a wild and unforgettable night out at the Poetry Brothel!

Hosting The Poetry Brothel at TenClub – as always – will be Andrej Kapor as The Poetry Pimp Daddy
